“Walk in obedience,” they say… but what they don’t always tell you is that obedience can hurt. Sometimes walking in faithfulness is not this easy, pretty journey it’s marked by pain, uncertainty, and countless questions about whether God’s promises for this season will really come to pass.
I remember a time when I deeply craved authentic relationships. I wanted people I could truly connect with. But God showed me something first: before I could be authentic with others, I had to be authentic with Him and with myself. That truth hit me like a ton of bricks.
Honestly, I felt shame. Anxiety. The real Mo? She was a disappointment more than once, more than twice, over and over again. Outwardly, I was dependable. I showed up for family, friends, even foes. But inside? My spirit was parched. I was running on empty.
Scripture reminds us:
“Obedience is better than sacrifice.” – 1 Samuel 15:22
And yet, how many times have I have we; chosen sacrifice instead of obedience? No need to raise your hand. We’ve all been there. We sacrifice our time, our self-respect, our health, our joy, even our peace… all in an effort to “do right” while avoiding the harder call: true obedience.
Obedience doesn’t always look glamorous. It isn’t always rewarded right away. But it is the way. Sacrifice without obedience is just noise. Obedience is where the power, the breakthrough, the intimacy with God is found. In the simplest form obedience, though costly, fills us with purpose and brings us closer to His heart for us.
So the next time you feel the pull to give up something that looks noble but sidesteps God’s actual instruction pause. Ask: is this sacrifice, or is this obedience?
Because He’s not looking for what we think He wants. He’s after our yes.
Reflection
Obedience isn’t about perfection it’s about surrender. It’s choosing God’s way even when it stretches you, humbles you, or costs you more than you thought you could give.
If you’re in that space today questioning, weary, or tempted to offer “sacrifice” instead of obedience know this: your yes is enough. God will meet you in it, strengthen you through it, and honor it in ways sacrifice never could.
So, what is He asking for your yes in this season?
